This year’s theme calls for Breaking the Cycle and Preventing Fistula Worldwide.
Obstetric Fistula is a serious childbirth injury caused by prolonged and obstructed labor.
And results when women are unable to access quality and timely maternal healthcare.
Across the world, nearly half a million women and girls are living with obstetric fistula In Yemen, obstetric fistula results in tragic consequences for women and girls and remains an issue of serious concern because About 5.5 million Yemeni women and girls of childbearing age have limited or no access to reproductive health services And Six out of 10 births take place without a skilled birth attendant.
However, obstetric fistula is preventable and treatable.
This means ending obstetric fistula in Yemen is within our reach.
We need to work together to ensure healthy pregnancies and safe childbirths by allowing women access to the following:
1. High-quality maternal, emergency obstetric, and newborn care,
2. Skilled midwives at childbirths,
3. Family planning services UNFPA has been at the forefront of preventing and treating fistula in Yemen.
Over 100 fistula patients receive free treatment and care from across the country through two fistula centers in Aden and Sana’a that UNFPA supports each year.
And we support targeted campaigns across governorates to help its prevention.
We remain committed to continuing our collaborative efforts to ensure safe pregnancies and childbirths and help every Yemeni woman and girl to health, safety, and dignity.
Together, we can save lives and eradicate childbirth injuries like fistula forever, and for all.
