Water is the fundamental source of life and a vital element to human survival. It symbolizes the earth and all living creatures that inhabit it. However, Yemen is currently facing a severe water crisis due to the rampant exploitation of non-renewable groundwater. It is a critical situation that demands urgent attention, considering that around 17.4 million Yemenis, half of which are children, require immediate assistance to access basic water and sanitation services.
The situation is further exacerbated by the impact of climate change-related impacts such as droughts, extreme flooding, cyclones, pests and disease outbreaks, changes in rainfall patterns, increased storm frequency and sea-level rise, and frequent locust invasions.
On December 22, 1992, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution and declared March 22nd as World Water Day.
Since 1993, the United Nations General Assembly has established this day as an annual event to raise public consciousness about the importance of water and the necessity of protecting it.
On World Water Day 2024, the United Nations in Yemen ensures the continuation of its fulfillment of Sustainable Development Goal 6: clean water and sanitation.
Through the joint efforts of UN Yemen entities, local authorities, partners, stakeholder, and donors, we can contribute to improving Yemen’s water and sanitation sector to leverage peace.
